Basic information

Since 1 January 2005, the National Archives has been a central administrative authority and a central state archives directly managed by the Ministry of the Interior. It is an organisational unit of state and an accounting unit; its budget is a part of the budget chapter of the Ministry of the Interior.

 

Department of Self-Government, State Administration until 1848, and Ecclesiastical Institutions Fonds
(1st Department)
The department administers archive groups of political, financial, judicial and ecclesiastical administration arisen from the activities of central authorities and institutions of the Bohemian state from the mid-12th to the mid-19th century.
The department also carries out pre-archival care at the supreme bodies of ecclesiastical institutions and stores their archival fonds (mostly in the form of deposits).
Unlike other workplaces of the National Archives, the department is located in a historic building in Dejvice. It has its own research room and a library branch is also available to researchers.

Department of Self-Government and State Administration Fonds from 1848–1918
(2nd Department)
The department administers archive groups of political, financial, judicial and mining administration and provincial self-government arisen from the activities of the provincial authorities of the Kingdom of Bohemia from the period 1848–1918 with overlaps into the 16th century. It administers also archive groups from the activities of the central administrative authorities, court offices and authorities managing the property of the imperial family from the same period, gained in the file and archive separation with Austria.

Department of State Administration Fonds from 1918–1945
(3rd Department)
The department administers archive groups of political, financial and judicial administration arisen from the activities of the central bodies of the Czechoslovak Republic and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia in the years 1918–1945, including the fonds of the German occupation authorities and the fonds of the Czechoslovak exile state bodies abroad 1939–1945. The department also administers archive groups of the Bohemian provincial administration and the Prague Police Headquarters.

Department of State Administration Fonds from 1945–1992
(4th Department)
The department administers archive groups arisen from the activities of Czechoslovak central authorities from 1945–1968 and Czech and federal central authorities from 1969–1992, including their facilities with state-wide or republic scope. It also administers a complex archive group of central bodies of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. The department also participates in the selection of archival records from the given time period.

Department of Records Management Inspection, State Administration Fonds after 1992 and Electronic Records
(5th Department)
The department administers archive groups arisen from the activities of the central authorities of the Czech Republic since 1993. The department carries out all expert activities in relation to the circle of public agencies defined by law, supervises their record management, pre-archival care and selection of archival records.
The department also maintains the basic registers of archival records stored in the National Archives, guarantees the development and implementation of the information system and administration of application programs, and provides network and computer technology management.
The Department also operates a specialized workplace for acceptance, long-term storage and access provision to documents in digital form related to agencies within the scope of the National Archives. Methodically, the workplace operates at the national level (National Digital Archives).

Department of Non-State Provenance Fonds and Collections
(6th Department)
The department administers archive groups of non-state provenance, especially personal and family archives, archive groups arisen from the activities of the supreme and similar bodies of political parties and movements, organisations with an international element, societies and citizens’ associations, trade unions, employers’ organizations and professional chambers (except those established by law), foundations and endowment funds, charitable organizations, and further archival collections. The department cooperates with designated private agencies, provides them with expert information services and, by mutual consent, performs the selection of archival records. It also systematically cooperates with organizations of foreign Czechs.

Department of Photo-, Phono-, Cinematographic Documents and Public Services
(8th Department)
The department administers archive groups made up of photographic, audio and cinematographic archival records. It ensures operation of the research room and, in cooperation with other departments, provides researchers with expert information service.
Further, the department ensures the operation of the filling office and organizes National Archives’ own record management. It also provides operation of photographic and digitizing studios and performs all reproductions of archival records for both the Archives and researchers. The department creates the concept of digitalization of archival records in the National Archives and, in cooperation with other departments, ensures its realization.
The department also provides publishing and distribution of the National Archives’ publications according to the editorial plan.
The department is also the organizational guarantor of all public events realized by the National Archives (excursions, exhibitions, lectures, conferences and seminars, film screenings).

Library
(9th Department)
Professional archive library, whose collection is based on the character, needs and history of the National Archives and its predecessors. It is focused mainly on archival science, history, auxiliary historical sciences, history of administration and law, computer science, and selectively on other disciplines. The library has the status of a public library, it provides all services resulting from legislative duties or from the cooperation of Czech libraries. It participates in the creation of contemporary and retrospective bibliographies of archival science.

Department of Care for Physical Condition of the Records
(10th Department)
The department carries out comprehensive care for the preservation of archival records stored in the National Archives. This includes both a set of preventive measures, including surveys of the physical condition of archival documents and checks on the microbiological cleanness of depositaries, as well as the conduct of conservation and restoration work. The department also fulfils the function of the central scientific and research workplace and methodological centre in this field.
