Testaments and Probate Writings (Forms and Transformations of Diplomatic Production in the Modern Period VI)

While late medieval wills were given attention in 2006 in the edited collection Kateřina Jíšová – Eva Doležalová: Late Medieval Testaments in Czech Cities. Sources, methodology and forms of use, writings from later times, especially from the Enlightenment and later periods, have remained outside the scope of comprehensive attention, despite the fact that since the late 1980s a number of works have been published on this topic, especially partial studies, but also book monographs, which have been stimulated by various foreign works.

The forthcoming volume Paginae historiae aims to contribute to the existing study of wills and probate burgher and clerical writings and also to fill the aforementioned gap and focus on additional materials in the form of 12 studies. The first part of the contributions will be devoted to burgher wills, both for the area of the towns of Central and Eastern Bohemia and on the example of specific cases from the environment of early modern Brno and Litoměřice. Three papers will give an insight into testamentary issues in Slovakia, namely for the towns of Skalica, Prešov and Poprad. Another group of papers, on the other hand, will go beyond 1780 and focus on the probate agenda in the patrimonial environment or changes in property transfers in the period up to 1870, while also innovatively presenting the probate files of entrepreneurs after 1854 as a new social stratum.

In preparation, Paginae historiae 33/1 will be published in the spring of 2025.

This semi-topical issue will focus on studies in the history of administration, auxiliary historical sciences, Czech and world history of political, economic, social and cultural history using the sources of the National Archives or with relation or connection to its holdings.

Some of the studies will also focus on the end of the Second World War and the reminder that during the war, and during 1945 itself, reconstruction work was being prepared and carried out to remove the destruction of the war. However, this is not just about post-war reconstruction, but the fact that every crisis or disaster will end and the state apparatus must be prepared to continuously update relevant plans and respond to new historical situations. The deadline for acceptance of texts to the editorial office of the journal is 31 March 2026.

Official documents and their boundaries

The studies will trace the hitherto underdeveloped types of documents, focusing on the boundaries between them or ‘borderline cases’, traces of the appearance of certain types of document before their use became widespread, the relationship between two- and three-dimensional artefacts, text and visual elements, and the private and official spheres. Attention will also be paid to document storage and its transformations. The workings of offices and registries will not be left out, since here too one can encounter many transitional stages in the process of the ‘birth of the official’. Finally, the perception of documents when they are no longer needed for the actual performance of the office – do they become a relic, a historical source or an unnecessary banality? The deadline for the acceptance of texts to the editorial office of the journal is 31 October 2026.

Food security - preparing to cope with supply difficulties and practical solutions during crises

The two world wars of the twentieth century led to the introduction of food rationing, but peacetime also faced a number of agricultural crises. The price and availability of food are among the factors that help maintain social and political peace. This is why states carefully design agricultural policies and, in the event of supply difficulties, proceed to put in place legislative and institutional mechanisms to ensure a basic level of saturation of the population. The deadline for submissions to the journal is 31 October 2028.
